Abstract

The COVID-19 health emergency forced higher education institutions to make an immediate transition to virtual learning modalities, which posed a particular challenge for teaching experimental sciences such as chemistry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of competence and the use of computer tools among faculty members of the Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry at the Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco during this period. A structured questionnaire was administered to 14 instructors, and the results were analyzed descriptively. The findings show that, although most participants reported intermediate proficiency in basic academic tools such as word processors, presentation software, and spreadsheets, their use of specialized chemistry software, including simulators and molecular modeling programs, was limited. Regarding educational platforms, Microsoft Teams was the most widely used for teaching classes, whereas Google Classroom and SEAD were used less frequently. It is concluded that the use of information and communication technologies made it possible to maintain academic continuity; however, the results also showed the need to strengthen faculty training in the use of digital tools applied to chemistry teaching.
