Evaluation of Rare Earth Elements in Lacustrine Sediments of the Northern Central Plateau between San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas, Mexico

Abstract

The Rare Earth Elements consist of Lanthanum to Lutetium and are chemical elements which are less soluble and relatively immobile during geological processes such as low-grade metamorphism, erosion, and hydrothermal alteration. In the San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas states, there are continental type salars which concentrate lacustrine sediments. These sediments are classified as sandy and clay-silt. In this study, the Rare Earth Elements in these sediments were evaluated to identify provenance, depositional environment, and weathering. The lacustrine sediments contain more clay component are slightly enriched in ΣREE. The values normalized to chondrite show an enriched pattern in LREE against HREE and in sediments (NASC). The Negative Eu and Ce anomalies indicate a continental source and a non-oxidative environment, respectively. Meanwhile, the positive Y/Ho ratios indicate the weathering process also suggest a continental affinity
